Image to Sand Art Converter
Upload a picture and watch it become thousands of colored sand grains. Pick a style, fine-tune the colors, then keep drawing on top, let it collapse under gravity, or download it.
Six ways to turn a picture into sand
Sand mosaic
Color quantization and dithering rebuild your photo from natural-looking grains.
Falling sand reconstruction
Grains rain down column by column and settle exactly into place, so the image appears from falling sand.
Silhouette
Extract the subject and fill it with a solid color, a gradient or tonal bands.
Sand painting
An edge-preserving painterly filter plus streaky grain texture, like art made with colored sand.
Pixel art
Blocks of uniform sand cells with a limited palette — perfect for icons and retro images.
Outline
Sobel edge detection traces the shapes of your image in sand lines.
Made for creativity, not just conversion
Your converted image is real sand on a live canvas. Release it and watch it pour into a pile, blow it away with wind, explode part of it, or add rainbow sand around it. When you are happy, export a high-resolution PNG, a vector SVG, a printable PDF, or record a timelapse video.

Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using a background worker. Your image is never sent anywhere unless you later choose to publish your finished artwork to the public gallery.
Which image formats are supported?
PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, GIF (the first frame) and SVG. SVG files are cleaned of scripts and external links before they are rasterized.
Can it remove the background?
Yes, for images with a plain or transparent background. It uses local color analysis from the image edges, not AI, so busy photo backgrounds may need cropping or a higher tolerance.
How detailed can the sand art be?
Each grain is one cell of the sand canvas. Choose the Fine simulation quality in Settings for the most grains, or increase the grain size for a chunkier, hand-poured look.
