Photo to Sand Art
Give your favorite photo the look of a hand-poured sand picture. The photo preset is tuned for faces, pets, travel snaps and landscapes, with smooth dithering and natural grain variation.
Tips for a great sand portrait
- Crop first. Drag on the preview to crop around the face — more grains go to the details that matter.
- Choose your palette. “From image” keeps true colors. The Desert or Sunset palettes give a warm, classic sand-bottle feel.
- Use the comparison slider. Slide between the original and the sand version while you adjust brightness, contrast and saturation.
- Animate it. Choose “Fall into place” to watch your photo build itself grain by grain, then record it as a GIF or MP4 to share.
Photo mosaic vs. sand painting
The sand mosaic style reproduces your photo faithfully. The sand painting style smooths flat areas and adds streaks so the picture looks as if it was painted with colored sand on a light table. Both are available in the image to sand art converter.
Frequently asked questions
What photos work best?
Photos with a clear subject and good lighting. Crop tightly around the subject and raise contrast slightly for the most striking result.
Why does my sand photo look grainy?
That is the sand texture. Lower “Grain texture” for a cleaner look, or increase the number of colors and keep Floyd–Steinberg dithering for smoother skin tones and skies.
Can I print my sand photo?
Yes. Use Download & Export → PDF to place a 300 DPI image on A4, A3, Letter or a custom page, or download a 4× PNG for photo printing.
Is it free?
Yes. All conversion and export features are free and run in your browser.
